Thoughts About God, II

I was thinking about this for a bit on my way into work today. Specifically, I was thinking about the argument for intelligent design.

Frequently it seems, the argument for intelligent design rests on a view of biological complexity and success. The classic example seems to be the eye. How could something so perfect and so complicated be arrived at by mere chance? Surely a maker must be behind this masterpiece!

For the purposes of this post, I choose to accept this argument. However, I propose that it be extended outside of the human realm just a bit. Let's consider the concept of intelligent design from the standpoint of non-human species. Specifically, those that practice cannibalism as a normal part of their reproductive cycle....

Consider you're a male Praying Mantis looking to go on your first big date. Essentially, you can assume the following:

Your girlfriend is going to tear you head off and devour you as soon as you're done with sex.

And as soon as she decapitates you, that's when your sex drive is going to really kick in.

See, Praying Mantises, much like any species, have inhibitors in their brains that prevent certain things from happening. In humans we have inhibitors stopping defecation and urination. That's why when we die we tend to make a mess; the inhibition is simply gone. In male Praying Mantises, there exist inhibitors against sex. Once they're gone...Well, let's just say that you and I will never be half the man a beheaded Praying Mantis is.

Let's put this in human terms....

You take a girl out for a nice date. Afterwords, you begin to put the moves on her. She responds by tearing your throat out and eating your head. Despite the fact that she's torn your head off your body, you begin to make sweet, sweet love to her with your corpse as she continues to devour you.

That is basically what male Praying Mantises have to look forward to.

Not necessarily an argument against an intelligent designer per se. However, it raises the question "Zombie sex? What kind of intelligent designer are we talking about here anyways?"
