The President is making some pretty grand extrapolations concerning the GOPs so called "Pledge to America".
Essentially, the difference between what Obama would like to see in terms of taxation and what the GOP would like to see in terms of taxation comes down to about 2% of the population: Obama and the democrats would like to see the tax cuts enacted under Bush remain for 98% of Americans, the GOP would prefer to see them remain for 100%.
What renders this disastrously farcical is that neither side of the aisle is willing to accept the obvious: Those 2% really don't matter.
While those making more than $250,000 a year certainly do pay higher taxes in America, both the GOP and the Democrats ignore that the fiscal black hole sucking away at the budget is clearly smack dab in the middle class.
Politically, it's impossible for either party to suggest this. The democrats busy themselves vilifying the wealthy as free loaders while the republicans propose amorphous spending cuts to everything and nothing. Especially not defense or Medicare. But everything else. Unless you like it.
The problem is this: Neither proposal is at all serious. The democratic position is simply Bush Lite, essentially: "This year, we'll have slightly less to not pay for this". The republican position outlined in the so called "Pledge to America" is so light on specifics, that it's almost impossible to not attack. You can't propose spending cuts on "stuff". Give us some details!
Ultimately, it's regrettable that Obama is attacking a republican economic proposal using scare tactics. More regrettable still, is the fact that the proposal is a farce.
