The Morning Blog, Late Night Edition

Sorry that time constraints (and wanting to talk to the Girlfriend), prevented me from posting anything this morning. I did have the chance to pick out some interesting bits of news though so...

Let's get into it a mere 12 hours later than I generally would!

This is a really good example of how capitalism brings peace. Israeli tech firms have started doing considerable amounts of outsourcing to Palestinian firms. Why?

Israel's high-tech industry is among the country's crowning achievements. Israel has the most start-ups per capita in the world and has helped produce such game-changing innovations as instant messaging and Internet telephony. Many Israeli tech firms send work offshore to eastern Europe, India or China.

In the past three years, however, some have turned to Palestinian engineers and programmers. They are cheaper, ambitious, work in the same time zone, and — surprisingly to many Israelis — are remarkably similar to them.

Get two parties to chat about the benefits they can get by working in cooperation and you'll quickly see that they stop shooting at each other.

On a personal note: Inasmuch as my Girlfriend lives for all intents and purposes, in another galaxy, I'd like to make it clear how grateful I am for IM.

Speaking of the Girlfriend, here's some Kacee Bait: Wow...Prince is 52? The purple Yoda has now been rocking for three straight decades.

This is a stupid post. I usually try not to dismiss things out of hand but it's stupid. No, Michael Vick does not deserve to have a dog. Absolutely not. That should be obvious. The relationship between humans and dogs is a profound one, probably unmatched anywhere else on Earth. He violated it grossly. He doesn't get to be a dog owner. Ever again. It's just too fucking bad that he's lonely. The end.

Pretty weird article out of the New York Times: A bone marrow registry recruited potential donors with sexy models. My first thought off the bat is: "This is a problem why?" Bone marrow transplants save lives. It's possible they might even lead to a cure for AIDS. So who cares if a pretty girl is asking you for a DNA swab rather than an old man in a lab coat? Ah. Here's the problem:

New Hampshire passed a law in 2006 requiring insurers to pay for tissue-typing tests for potential bone marrow donors. But at the time, Mr. Boffetti said, proponents told lawmakers that each test would cost $100 or less.

I don't understand why insurers are required to pay for this sort of thing. Explain please?

The Steelers will be playing these guys on Sunday. I have high hopes. I'd love to see a pile of interceptions but unfortunately... I'm still optimistic though. It's almost impossible for the Black and Gold to not make the playoffs this year. I would assume that they'll be the second seed at worst.

Good post about the TSAs screening techniques. I have to admit: Though I think that the pat downs and the scans are at worst assault and at best egregious invasions of privacy, I'm not entirely sure that I'm comfortable with the alternatives. However, it's important to recognize that all of the new security measures enacted since 9/11 have caught exactly no terrorists.

Countdown to doing the right thing... The Senate vote on DADT is scheduled for Saturday. Wow...If they actually manage to pull this off during a lameduck session of Congress...You've no idea how impressed I'll be!

More fallout from the culture wars and in this case, I think it's completely appropriate. One of the artists showing at the Smithsonian's Hide/Seek display of gay artists has asked that his art be removed to show solidarity. This goes in hand with the Warhol Museum (by the way, the largest museum dedicated to a single artist in America), refusing to provide the Smithsonian with funding for future exhibits. I think it's a good step. The problem is that the people on the religious right who are the ones causing a scene in the first place, probably just don't care. They're not looking at art in the first place. It's absence has no effect on them.

North Korea threatens further strikes against the South. Frankly, I think that even the lunatics in Pyongyang realize that they just can't afford this sort of belligerence. Given the recent attacks on South Korean real estate, I'm going to file this under "possible but unlikely".

Bad weather.

Hey! Animals! Doing things!

Your year in important news.

And...

Your year in sex.
