North Korea has threatened South Korea with the possibility of nuclear war. Which means it must be Monday.
And because it's Monday, it looks as though Silvio Berlusconi is fighting for his political life in the face of oncoming confidence votes. Probably one of the duller Berlusconi articles I've ever read to be honest. Prostitution and vote buying are only mentioned in passing. Frankly, I'll miss him if he goes. Besides him, the only other Italian leader I can name is Mussolini. And he didn't provide half as many laughs.
On a similar note, Michael Steele will announce whether or not he intends to try to hold onto his spot as Republican National Committee head. Sadly, another rather dry article. There's nary a mention of bondage themed strip clubs.
Also this Monday, Mexicans have taken to the streets in favor of slain drug lord Nazario "The Craziest One" Moreno. Apparently, his habit of handing out bibles to the poor outweighed his habit of cutting poor peoples heads off. It says something regrettable about a completely failed policy when this sort of person achieves a Robin Hood-like status.
But hey, it's Monday.
This Monday we also get treated to a rather baffling practice of the Supreme Court: Appointing lawyers to argue so-called "orphan" cases that nobody else cares about. Essentially, if a case reaches the Supreme Court and the government reverses it's position...well, somebody's gotta argue it! We can't have those Justices sitting around all day with nothing to do!
More Monday madness: Looks like Rep. Ron Paul will get his day in the sun. I'm sure I needn't point out the irony of putting the author of "End the Fed" in charge of the congressional subcommittee that oversees the Federal Reserve. However I'd like to lay out some quick, general thoughts about Dr. Paul:
I do respect the man for his forthrightness. He generally and consistently votes the line with his conscience, for good or ill. While I broadly support his philosophy of non-interventionism (both in terms of foreign wars and domestic economic policy), I have to make it clear that for me at least, the man utterly fails the Libertarian litmus test: His voting record is hostile to both gay and reproductive rights. I'll admit that there is a credible Libertarian argument in opposition to abortion, I simply don't agree with it. However, it is inconceivable to me that anyone truly interested in individual autonomy can argue on the one hand that the government has no place in your wallet while on the other, that it's necessary and proper for it to take a restrictive role in your personal relationship. I can't possibly think of a more intrusive view of the State.
Monday, Monday, Monday...Shaping up to be a banner day! The Supreme Court is refusing to block Columbia Universities expansion into West Harlem. Columbia by the way, should be ashamed of itself. This is in my opinion, a textbook example of how eminent domain laws can be abused. You can read more about it here and here but to sum up: Columbia bought property in order to devalue it. They drove out businesses by either refusing to renew leases or making unrealistic demands and then left the properties vacant. As a result, the entire area went downhill. At this point, an "impartial" firm that had previously represented Columbia in it's attempts to get government approval for eminent domain declared the area "blighted". This allowed New York to seize the properties of anyone not willing to sell out and hand them over to whom for development? You get one guess: Rhymes with Golumbia.
Huh...I guess they caught him red-handed.
I trust that everybody did their duty and watched the Steelers game yesterday. Can we discuss what a phenomenal player Troy Polamalu is?
A man described as having "personality problems" was arrested after taking children hostage. With a sword. Did I mention that he's French?
The Guardian provides a list of Top 10 Species discovered in the past decade. I am particularly fond of that fish-monster with the transparent head.
Finally...
I got as far as the word "bread knife".
