The Morning Blog

Did I mention the small matter of DADT?

Not to rain on anyone's parade but though that's really, really great and all, I feel the need to reiterate that The Dream Act didn't fare so well.

In a floor speech, Senator Richard J. Durbin, Democrat of Illinois, a main champion of the Dream act, urged a yes vote. “I want to make it clear to my colleagues, you won’t get many chances in the United States Senate, in the course of your career, to face clear votes on the issue of justice,” he said.

“Thousands of children in America who live in the shadows and dream of greatness,” he said. “They are children who have been raised in this country. They stand in the classrooms and pledge allegiance to our flag. They sing our ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ as our national anthem. They believe in their heart of hearts this is home. This is the only country they have ever known.”

Realize that in some cases, some of these children might not even realize that they are in fact in the country illegally until they apply to college.

The View from Zimbabwe: With inflation reaching a staggering 500 billion percent, people are paying for their medical care with peanuts. For real. I'm not kidding.

Oh lovely: Drinking water causes cancer.

This is promising news: African Union forces are making progress against the Somali Shabbab. Granted, progress means "control over a single neighborhood in the capital" so it has to be taken with a grain of salt. Great takeaway:

The effort to provide better services is led by Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, a former employee of the New York state transportation department who was recently appointed prime minister. He spends most of his time in a rudimentary office trying to avoid assassination. “I don’t want to sound Republican, but we have the smallest government,” he says.

Speaking of Africa: With the referendum approaching on South Sudan splitting from the North, it appears as though Bashir has doubled down on being a terrible person. Nice that he's being so unambiguous about it. It would be inconsiderate if he left any doubt.

The theme for the day seems to be "Out of Africa, always something new": Do I think that the UN can probably do quite a bit of good in Ivory Coast? Absolutely. Do I think that some pretty serious sovereignty issues are being raised by their refusal to leave? Unfortunately...Yeah.

Just in case you were wondering what Dolph Lundgren has been thinking about. Apparently, he enjoys a good cry.

Leonard Cohen: I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel/ you were talking so brave and so sweet/ giving me head on the unmade bed/ well the limousines wait in the street.

This guy is a dick!

Finally, I found this a bit charming:

The Man Who Hated Christmas.
