Sadly, a two-fer.
And it's one I'm going to be a little lazy about because each of these august gentleman really deserve to be presented by their own works.
To begin with, master of the deadpan one-liner, Leslie Nielsen died at 84. Ironically, Nielsen began his career as a serious, leading man type actor. Unfortunately for his dramatic hopes (but oh so very, very fortunately for the rest of us), he proved to be almost unstoppably funny.
Can we agree that there are only two unbelievably awesome sequels that effectively eclipsed the success of their predecessors? Now, I'm not talking about thematically linked, French art house cinema here. I'm talking about big budget phantasias. Really, the "Godfather Part II" and "The Empire Strikes Back" are the only ones that qualify for this lofty honor.
And sadly, Irvin Kershner, director of the latter has died at 87.
Screw Obi-Wan Kenobi. Kershner was our only hope against Jar Jar Binks.
