So Very Strange, So Very Sad, So Very Weird

I truly hope that I'm not being paternalistic about this. But this story out of the Guardian strikes me as so profoundly strange.

That said, I am from the developed world first, a Westerner second (I say that because as an American, I come from a melange of cultures inherently), and finally a non-believer. Regardless, this strikes me as so far beyond the pale of contemporary humanity.

Ultimately, this is religion run amok. This is the sort of argument the "new atheist" salivate over. It's superstition made murderous. I'd read before about the problems facing albinos in East Africa (I forget which but I know one country issues them cell phones in order to call the police in the event they're threatened), but now we're talking about an MP being stalked.

So very, very strange, so very sad, so very weird.

Ultimately though I must ask: Have any Western democracies ever elected an albino to a position of national authority?
