I really enjoy Journalisted. It's an excellent tool if you want to see what news stories are and are not receiving extensive coverage (sadly, it's currently limited to UK newspapers).
Unfortunately, it often says unpleasant things about where the priorities of the reading public lie.
For example: Fashion designer John Galliono was fired by Christian Dior. This was covered in 157 articles.
Argentine dictators are on trial for orchestrating the kidnapping of hundreds of babies born to torture victims: 4 articles.

Videla, 85, has been sentenced to life in prison, and Bignone, 83, is serving a 25-year term for other crimes committed during the 1976-1983 dictatorship, but this is the first trial focused on the alleged plan to steal as many as 400 infants from leftists who were kidnapped, tortured and made to disappear during the junta's crackdown on political dissent.
There are 13,000 people on the official list of those killed, although rights groups estimate as many as 30,000 died.
The dictatorship generally drew the line at killing children, but the existence of babies belonging to people who officially no longer existed created a problem for the junta leaders.
The indictment alleges they solved it by falsifying paperwork and arranging illegal adoptions by people sympathetic to the military regime.
Some 500 women were known to be pregnant before they disappeared, according to formal complaints from their families or other official witness accounts.
To date, 102 people born to vanished dissidents have since recovered their true identities with the aid of the Grandmothers, which helped create a national database of DNA evidence to match children with their birth families.

The Periodic Horror
This is not an article for the squeamish. Frankly, it's an article that should be outrageous to anyone with any sort of humanity or moral compass.
I say this with no sense of hyperbole in the context of a day in which I've linked to articles about a mass infant grave in Tanzania and the possible theft and sale of hundreds of Spanish babies.
Humans simply have a very, very special relationship with dogs. Our species have evolved together that way. Without dogs, humans would be very different. Without humans, dogs would simply not be dogs.
I'd say that horses might almost enjoy the same same relationship but it's simply not the same thing. Simply count the number of people you know that own dogs vs. those owning horses.
As such, this sort of thing rises to a horror beyond the gross cruelty of it. It feels like betrayal.

A congresswoman was shot in the head and six people, including a nine year old girl are dead. WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE?!?!?!
Pardon the caps but FUCK THEM. FUCK THAT. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. UTTERLY FUCKING RIDICULOUS. IT MAKES ME PHYSICALLY SICK. THERE IS NO EXCUSE. NONE. ZILCH. THIS IS BEYOND REPROACH. AND IT MUST END NOW.
A child is dead! There is no backing away from that precipice.
I will not make any presumptions as to whether or not the vitriolic quality of current political discourse may have contributed to this. But for the love of God...If it did...All of us should be ashamed for letting things fall so far.

Taking reality tv a bit far here people...
Bangladeshi television has decided it will not air a series of zippy, fun profiles of the country's most famous hangman.
Yeah, that sounds tasteful.
More alarming however, is this:
Outside of the pretty profound moral consequences of providing prisoners incentive to be executioners let's consider the utter craziness of this: A convicted murderer is getting time off his sentence by doing what now? Killing folks.
I can't wrap my mind around how this could be considered a good idea on any level.

The hangman, who has hanged nine people in his 21 years in prison, has requested anonymity.
But he told the BBC that the programmes on the private channel, Banglavision, were mainly about his lifestyle.

The hangman started working as an executioner seven years ago and was trained for the job while serving a 30-year murder sentence - passed down when he was aged only 16 - for murder.
He was released early in August after getting 18 months' time off for working as a hangman.

The Periodic Horror, Part Deux
Never trust a day that yields more than one periodic horror. Ever.
Anyways, via the esteemable Radley Balko, here is a gallery of old advertisements that would not be allowed today. No. Seriously. Under no circumstances whatsoever. And that is a good thing.
So about this image I'm throwing up here...
Well, there are a ton of disturbing ads featured in the gallery. They range from the merely offensive ( "Blow it in her face and she'll follow you anywhere" ) to the disconcerting to the for lack of a better description, "Oh my God! I can't believe people used to say that sort of thing! What was wrong with us?"
For reals. They're all very disturbing to modern sensibilities.
But one must take the cake and win the title of "Periodic Horror". I had a ton of different images to choose from and to be honest, almost didn't choose this one. Because it is simply too creepy. I'm sort of terrified that I'm going to post this thing and end up chatting with FBI agents in the morning. But...Honestly...It's the freakiest fucking thing on a freaky ass gallery of the way people used to sell crap. It wins. So here ya go: Your Periodic Horror:
